With a lot of talk about an impending recession looming over us, it’s important to learn how to recession proof your coaching or consulting business. While we personally have no control over when or how that happens, there are measures that you can take to ensure you’re able to ride the waves of economic uncertainty.

I know what it takes to help others build a high ticket offer, find high-paying clients, and build systems to scale their coaching or consulting business to high six and seven-figures. But I also know what it takes to prepare for an economic shift.

Here are my top five strategies to recession-proof your coaching or consulting business:

#1 Go After a High Caliber Market

One of the best ways that you can recession-proof your coaching or consulting business is to go after a higher caliber market. If your ideal clients are struggling financially now, these are the people who are going to struggle even more in a recession. However, there are plenty of people who are doing just fine and who are going to be able to ride the waves of economic uncertainty.

Find out how one of my client did this in the pandemic year by clicking above.

These people will continue to invest in themselves and their businesses. If you get ahead of the curve and start to position yourself to go after a higher caliber market then you’re going to have people who will be able to invest in your programs even during a recession.

#2 Focus on Industries That Will Thrive No Matter What

Another common way you can recession-proof your coaching or consulting business is to focus on serving industries that will thrive no matter what is going on in the world. Some industries even skyrocket during economic shifts. Look at how food delivery and tech companies like Zoom boomed during the uncertainty of Covid.

Certain industries are going to thrive no matter what. Health care, education, digital marketing, beauty, and finance are just some examples of industries that are usually not affected by an economic downturn. Think about which industries are going to be growing no matter what and will need your services and then position yourself to go after them.

#3 Solve an Urgent Need

The third strategy is to solve an urgent need. If you want to have an irresistible coaching or consulting offer that sells no matter what is happening with the economy, then you need to solve an urgent need. If someone has an urgent problem that needs solving they will prioritize investing to get it solved.

If your business is positioned to have a Band-Aid solution to a problem that isn’t really urgent, you’re going to struggle to sell it. If you position yourself and your offers as more of a nice-to-have versus a must-have, you’re going to have a harder time selling it. When it comes to putting together your offers, make sure that you really understand your ideal client, you are targeting some of their deepest pain points, and you are solving those pain points with your services.

#4 Invest in the Help You Need Now

Another way you can help recession-proof your coaching or consulting business is by investing in the help that you need now. If you get the mentorship you need now to help you set up your business to be successful, by focusing on the right strategy, the right systems, and the right team, you can actually grow your business during this time.

There are two types of people who are going to react to the market; those with a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

When you have a fixed mindset you may go into fear, feel like you have to hold on to every dollar, and may lose opportunity to gain market share. The people who have a growth mindset understand that there’s always opportunity and make the sound decision to invest into setting their business up to be successful and gaining market share during this time.

#5 Don’t Buy Into the Fear

If you want to be successful in business despite a recession, don’t buy into the fear. As someone who has created a successful 7-figure business, I can tell you that your mindset and attitude play a huge part in your ability to be successful. If you believe that the sky is falling and that your business is not going to be successful then it won’t. If you perceive that there are always opportunities, follow my tips of going after a higher caliber market in a booming industry, and you position yourself to solve an urgent need, then you have nothing to worry about.

Trust in your gifts and invest in the help you need. Avoid the fear and see this as an opportunity to grow. During Covid, I saw many coaching and consulting businesses collapse, but I also saw many coaches and consultants, like myself and my clients, who were set up successfully to grow and experience exponential growth. There is always opportunity when you have the right offer, marketing, and systems in place so don’t buy into the fear.

Do you feel you can implement any or all of the five strategies to recession proof your business? I would love to hear which step you can implement immediately. Please leave a comment and let me know. If you need support to help set your business up to be recession proof, book a call today.
