How to Build Your Influence Online

Did you know that 82% of consumers trust social networks to guide their purchasing decisions? With the advent of social media, our social networks have expanded beyond family and friends to online influencers. Numerous studies show people are more willing to buy from influencers than they are from celebrities.

As a result, it’s important now more than ever to build your influence online. Especially, if you’re hoping to build a seven-figure coaching business through high-ticket offers. By building your influence online you build a base of consumers who trust you, and in turn, buy. And when they buy, it directly impacts your bottom line.

So how exactly do you build a powerful online influence? In this article, we’ll cover exactly what you can do to influence people to buy from you.

Build Your Network to Build Your Influence

In order to influence people to buy from you, they must first connect with you online

Building your influence online begins with building your online network. In order to influence people to buy from you, they must first connect with you online. If you’re a coach looking to sell high-ticket offers, it’s important to build an online community of people who have a direct need for your services.

The key is putting the right people into your network. Some people confuse follower count as a sign of profitability and aim for vanity numbers like this. They do outlandish things like buying fake followers or adding people at random. At the end of the day, these tactics won’t help you create a successful business.

You actually don’t even need to have hundreds of thousands of followers to create a seven-figure coaching or consulting business. You can become a micro-influencer. Someone with an intimate network of say 15,000 to 50,000 followers, who still has a very successful business.

82% of consumers trust social networks to guide their purchasing decisions

The reason micro-influencing works so powerfully is simple. An online audience of 15,000 of your target customers is more monetizable than an audience of 1 million people who’ll never buy from you.

The first step to influence people to buy from you is to build a powerful network of your ideal clientele. This will play a key role in selling your own high-ticket offers. It will also attract brands to partner with you on sponsorship deals. You need to have the right people who are going to buy relevant products and services from you and others.

Build Influence Through Trust and Rapport

You build influence by letting people know you understand them and the issues they are facing

The next method you can use to influence people to buy from you is to build trust and rapport through the content you post. It’s not enough to be present online. You need to educate people on who you are and what value you hold.

If content is king, consistency is queen.

You need to get them to see you as someone who understands their issues and you can ultimately help them. You do this by educating them with valuable content, answering questions they may have and showing them quick tips they can use to navigate their problems.

Furthermore, it’s important to tailor your content to not only the audience but also the platform. Each platform is a little bit different. TikTok features short videos. Instagram remains image rich. While LinkedIn focuses much more on content that is written and geared toward businesses. Posting content relevant to each platform to build trust even more quickly.

When I first started out I remember I was told to build my “body of work” online. If you look at anyone who’s influential on the internet they have a huge body of online work. Whether it’s hundreds of YouTube videos, years of blogs, or endless Instagram photos and reels.

They put themselves out there in a big way, establish themselves as experts, and build their influence with content.

If content is king, consistency is queen. So many people start and stop their content strategy and that is a big No-No. Attention is the new currency, and your competition is fierce. People are constantly vying for the attention of others, so If you want to influence people to buy from you then you must be willing to not only put yourself out there, but do it consistently.

Over the years I’ve coached tons of business owners and can tell you the hardest part is just showing up. My most successful students are the ones who have a vision of becoming a real authority in their space. They want to make an impact and, yes of course, build successful seven-figure coaching and consulting businesses. To get there, they’re willing to do whatever it takes.

So showing up day in and day out becomes essential. Show up as the expert, teaching others what you know and that you understand their problems. Show them that you have a way to help them achieve the life or the business that they desire.

With the numerous internet gurus out there, people want to know that you deeply understand what they’re currently experiencing.

The beautiful thing about social media is you can always find the platform that most closely aligns with how you like to share your knowledge and expertise. If you’re a very visual person and love taking photos, Instagram will be a great fit for you.

If you love to write then blogging could be an excellent medium for you. If you love making videos then Tik Tok and YouTube are amazing mediums for you to share your message.

Likewise, If you are passionate about sharing your voice, then podcasts are a great option.
What’s most important is 1) you choose a medium that you enjoy and 2) it’s a platform where your ideal clients are hanging out.

For example, many of my clients are building seven-figure coaching and consulting businesses marketing to companies. They may be a business strategist, executive coach, or even a leadership coach selling to anything from small businesses all the way up to Fortune 500 companies. For them, marketing their high-ticket offers and services is best suited on LinkedIn. This platform remains the number one B2B community.

Side note, if you’re curious about how to leverage LinkedIn to fill up your sales pipeline with high-paying clients, whether that’s individuals or companies, then I highly recommend you check out my masterclass on LinkedIn lead gen mastery.

Influencing people to buy from you comes with trust and rapport. Trust and rapport come with time. Creating amazing, high-value content consistently will be key in building your online influence.

Using Social Proof to Build Influence Online

Online reviews and testimonials are a powerful way to build your influence online

Aside from building your network and trust, there are additional strategies to influence people to buy from you. One such method to build online influence is through social proof.

After friends and family, the majority of consumers, 91% in fact, consult review sites before making a purchase. Therefore, share your testimonials and past customer experiences with your high-ticket offers and services. It becomes essential to influence people to buy from you in the future.

Ultimately, people trust what works. If they see your program or service worked for someone else, they’re more likely to think it’ll work for them. In this digital age, it’s not enough to simply tell people you create results. You have to show them.

You need to become your own biggest cheerleader.

Take me for example. I built my business through a combination of consistent content, delivering massive results, and sharing social proof online. It took my initial clients raving about their experience to really open the floodgates, so to speak.

As someone building a seven-figure coaching or consulting business, it’s important that you measure, track, and share your client results. Especially in the first few years of business. You need to become your own biggest cheerleader.

This means absolutely supporting your clients to get the results you’ve promised. This way you can use their stories to increase your influence and influence people to buy from you in the future.

Picking the Right Message to Build Influence

Using the right messaging on social media will help you position yourself as an expert

Messaging is another key aspect of influence. If you understand how to effectively communicate with your target market, they will learn to trust you. This is where 90% of clients I’ve worked with stumble the most when trying to build a seven-figure coaching business.

You must effectively communicate that you understand your ideal client’s struggles at a deep level. They want to know that you’ve been there, done that. That you’ve built a solution to solve their problems.

This is where positioning also plays a key role in using your messaging to build an online influence. You can think of positioning as how you’re perceived online. If you want to be paid as an expert in your field, people must view you as an expert. This requires your positioning to be elevated. You can grow yourself as an authority through your words, AKA messaging, through the imagery you use, your branding, and the manner in which you post your content.

Start Small to Build Influence

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the different ways you can influence people to buy from you online, it’s okay. You’re not alone. Nearly all of my clients have been in your same position.

As I mentioned earlier, building your online influence will take time. It begins with selecting a platform best suited for you and your audience. Building a network, creating content consistently to grow trust and rapport on that network, and then sharing the right social proof and messaging to position yourself as an expert in your field.

If you’re feeling at all lost, start small.

I teach a concept called the Ladder of Influence. It breaks down influence into four categories: the generalist, the specialist, the expert, and the thought leader. If you’re curious about how to elevate your influence so that you can attract more clients, make more sales and ultimately scale to a seven-figure coaching or consulting business, I highly recommend you download my free 33-page guide on the ladder of influence.
